National University of Singapore Launches Four New Industry-oriented Master of Science Programmes

By Sun Yeneng, Dean of the Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Science (FoS) officially launched four new Master of Science (MSc) coursework programmes with a practical orientation in late January. The four programmes are, MSc in Biotechnology, MSc in Biodiversity Conservation and Nature-based Climate Solutions, MSc in Chemical Sciences, and, MSc in Physics for Technology.
These new programmes are in line with NUS’ vision to provide more lifelong learning opportunities for fresh graduates and working adults in the region to advance their competencies. The admission is currently ongoing and the inaugural cohorts will commence in August 2021 to embark on either full-time or part-time study.
The launch of the four new programmes, together with the recently revamped MSc in Statistics programme launched in December 2020, are part of FoS’s new initiatives to strengthen its offerings of industry-oriented Masters programmes.
These programmes strive to shape students into ‘doers’ – people with both the theoretical background necessary to approach complex problems and the hands-on experience to solve these problems. The respective host departments, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Physics, have curated robust and transformative curricula that typically combine classroom learning with industrial projects. The deliveries are backed by top-ranked faculty members, together with selected senior industry practitioners.
The FoS now hosts a comprehensive suite of more than 10 of Masters programmes, ranging from quantitative to lab-based subjects. Among them, programmes like MSc in Data Science and Machine Learning, MSc in Quantitative Finance, MSc in Food Sciences and Human Nutrition and MSc in Forensic Science, have been much sought-after across the region for their high relevance to the latest industry trends.
