AUN-QA Courtesy Visit to Indonesia Series #2: UBAYA

By
Patitin Lertnaikiat
AUN Programme Officer;

The second destination of the AUN-QA Courtesy Visit was Universitas Surabaya (UBAYA) on May 31, 2022. UBAYA was established in 1968, and is positioned to be one of the leading private universities in Indonesia. Almost all the programs have achieved the highest rankings possible, making the university one of the leading private universities in the country. The visit signified the return of on-site assessments and other operations with the AUN Secretariat and served as a great opportunity for the AUN-QA team to have a face-to-face discussion with the UBAYA team on prominent matters, including the university’s post-pandemic plans and quality assessment feedback and future, as well as other operations by the AUN Secretariat.

UBAYA is one of the universities which are relatively new to the partnership with AUN-QA and its quality assurance services, projects and activities. The university’s first assessment with AUN-QA was conducted back in 2019, and since then the university has continued the collaboration with the AUN thematic network in three Programme Assessments, bringing the total number of programmes assessed to 6 programmes. Due to recent disruptions from the pandemic, the last assessment in 2022 with UBAYA was conducted online. This Courtesy Visit aims to signify the return of on-site assessments and other operations with the AUN Secretariat.

The AUN-QA team received a warm welcome by the university and was led to one of UBAYA’s conference rooms where both parties discussed matters that will further strengthen relationships between AUN-QA and the university in the future. Prominent topics brought up were the university’s assessment feedback, UBAYA’s future plans for the post pandemic, and AUN activities that may hold strategic potential for the expansion of UBAYA’s international relations.

The meeting started with feedback on the assessment system. While the current assessment system is satisfactory, UBAYA’s feedback will be valuable to further improve the system. Afterwards, the team proceeded to inform UBAYA about upcoming AUN events of interests, notably:

  • The AUN-QA Training Course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment
  • Online Workshop on Writing Self-Assessment Report (SAR) for Successful AUN-QA Programme Assessment (Version 4.0)
  • AUN-QA International Conference
  • Global University Associations Forum (GUAF)
  • Onsite AUN-QA Assessment at Programme Level
  • Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia (CALOHEA)

During the discussion, UBAYA expressed their enjoyment of strong international exposure through active international programs. The AUN-QA team and the university also had some extensive discussions regarding the Global University Associations Forum (GUAF). Following the GUAF for next year is also the AUN-QA International Conference, which also potentially benefits UBAYA’s goals to further their international relations.

Soon after the AUN-QA team informed UBAYA about upcoming events, the meeting concluded with both teams exchanging gifts and taking commemorative photos together for the visit. We at the AUN-QA would like to extend our highest gratitude to UBAYA for the warm welcome received and the fruitful discussion that may potentially lead to a closer partnership between the university and AUN-QA in the future.

Stay tuned for next week as the team visits the last destination of the Courtesy Visit, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).
