Ninnart Ratanasukhon
AUN Programme Officer;

The 7th General Meeting of the CALOHEA (Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia) Project was held from 13-15 December 2023 in Porto, Portugal. The Meeting saw the participation of representatives of the project’s partner universities from across the ASEAN region.

The three-day event was declared open  with welcoming speeches by Dr. Robert Wagenaar, Director of the International Tuning Academy, University Groningen and Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, Executive Director of AUN.

The rest of Day 1 featured as well an overview of the current state and next steps for CALOHEA’s key activities on developing Subject-Area Specific Qualifications and Assessment Reference Frameworks (Line 1/Recognition Mechanism 1), Student Workload Measurement (Line 2/Recognition Mechanism 2), and the implementation of Authentic Assessments (Line 3/Recognition Mechanism 3). The university representatives in attendance then worked in specific Subject Area Groups to finalize reference frameworks and examples for authentic assessments for learning outcomes comparability in the three subject areas of civil engineering, medicine, and teacher education.

The second day of the event saw the continuation of the discussion at the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Porto. The participants shared reports on the implementation of authentic assessments and student workload measurement at their respective institutions and brainstormed in each Subject Area Group for suggestions in the prospect of  bridging Southeast Asian and European student workload contexts and improving curriculum design accordingly.

On the final day of the Meeting, the discussion revolved around ways forward for disseminating the outcomes of the CALOHEA Project and ensuring the sustainability of the project’s impact once the project ends. In this portion of the event, the university representatives  also presented key achievements in their subject areas over the course of the project. The Meeting concluded with reflection on the next steps for continuing the CALOHEA Project’s mission in enhancing academic mobility and learning outcomes recognition between degree programs among Southeast Asian universities.
